The Supreme Court of Nigeria has reserved its judgment on a lawsuit filed by 16 state governments challenging the constitutionality of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and related agencies.

A seven-justice panel, led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, heard arguments from attorneys on Tuesday, October 22, before deciding to delay the ruling.

The Lawsuit: Background and Parties Involved

Initially filed by Kogi State through its Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the lawsuit gained support from 15 other states, including:

– Ondo

– Edo

– Oyo

– Ogun

– Nasarawa

– Kebbi

– Katsina

– Sokoto

– Jigawa

– Enugu

– Benue

– Plateau

– Cross-River

– Niger

However, Anambra, Adamawa, and Ebonyi have since withdrawn from the case, with the panel granting their request.

Implications and Next Steps

The delayed ruling leaves the fate of the EFCC, Nigeria’s primary anti-graft agency, uncertain. The commission’s constitutionality has been a subject of debate, and this lawsuit’s outcome will significantly impact the country’s fight against corruption.
