What started as an internship at Akweya TV has turned into a surprisingly exciting journey of learning, growth, and self-discovery.
Akweya TV is a media organisation that produces and shares different forms of content, including news stories, newsletters, press releases, programmes, video productions, and other media activities. Behind these activities is a strong culture of teamwork, communication, meetings, task-sharing, and supervision.
One of the things that makes the organisation interesting is how everyone contributes to getting the work done. Staff and interns work together, share responsibilities, receive assignments, and provide updates on their progress. Regular meetings also help the team plan ahead, especially for Mondays and days when the organisation does not operate.
But for me, the most exciting part has been being given the opportunity to actually participate and learn by doing.
During my internship, I have written news stories from press releases, worked on scripts, assisted with shooting episodes, helped with studio setup, contributed to the 5th Estate show, and attended online webinars to gather information for news stories.
Every assignment has brought something new.
More importantly, these experiences have allowed me to take what I learnt in school and apply it in a real media environment. I have learnt how to work with others, meet deadlines, accept corrections, communicate effectively, and take responsibility for the tasks assigned to me.
And then came the biggest surprise…
One of the most rewarding parts of this internship has been discovering how much my confidence has grown.
At the beginning, speaking or presenting in front of people could feel challenging. But after participating in different activities, I was genuinely surprised by the improvement I began to see in myself.
The more I participated, the more confident I became.
That experience taught me something important: sometimes, we don’t realise what we are capable of until we are given the opportunity to try.
Of course, not everything always goes according to plan. But even those moments have become valuable lessons. They have taught me to adapt, communicate better, work with others, and find solutions when unexpected situations arise.

My biggest takeaway
My internship at Akweya TV has become much more than simply fulfilling an academic requirement.
It has been an opportunity to learn, participate, make mistakes, improve, and discover a more confident version of myself.
I have gained practical media experience, strengthened my communication and teamwork skills, and developed a better understanding of how a media organisation operates.
Looking back, the biggest surprise is not just how much I have learnt about media.
It is how much I have learnt about myself.
And that, perhaps, is one of the greatest things an internship can give you.
