For many Nigerian entrepreneurs, having a good product is only the beginning. The bigger challenge is building a business that can attract customers, create jobs and grow sustainably.

  • Building Stronger Businesses
    • Creating Opportunities Beyond the Programme

This is the opportunity being created through the Grow Enterprise Africa (GEA) SME Accelerator, an eight-week programme designed to help small and medium-sized businesses strengthen their operations and prepare for growth.

The inaugural programme selected more than 40 businesses from over 550 applications. The participants come from 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory, including Lagos, Kaduna, Akwa Ibom, Taraba, Abuja, Kano, Adamawa, Kwara, Kebbi and Oyo.

Agriculture represents the largest sector among the participating businesses, while many of the companies have been operating for between five and 10 years and employ an average of four to eight people.

Building Stronger Businesses

The programme focuses on practical areas that can help entrepreneurs move their businesses forward.

Participants receive training, mentorship, assignments and opportunities for peer learning in five key areas: People and Leadership, Legal and Governance, Marketing and Brand Visibility, Sales and Market Growth, and Finance and Capital Readiness.

The goal is to help business owners identify weaknesses, develop better systems, reach new markets and become more prepared for external finance and investment.

For entrepreneurs such as Joyce Folaranmi of Agro Haven and Paul James Eteudo of Vegituber Farms Limited, the programme also offers opportunities to learn, build networks, explore collaborations and improve access to markets and funding opportunities.

Creating Opportunities Beyond the Programme

GEA founder Remi Ademiju said stronger SMEs can contribute to wider economic development by creating sustainable businesses and employment opportunities.

The organisation also plans to maintain relationships with participating businesses after the eight-week programme and connect suitable enterprises with corporate organisations, banks, development finance institutions and potential investors.

The programme does not guarantee funding, but it aims to help businesses become better prepared to attract it.

For these entrepreneurs, the accelerator represents more than eight weeks of training. It is an opportunity to gain knowledge, build valuable connections and strengthen businesses that could create opportunities for others.

Across Nigeria, small businesses continue to turn ideas into products, services and livelihoods. With the right knowledge, support and networks, those small beginnings can become bigger possibilities.
