The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has raised concerns over the continued attacks and loss of lives in Plateau State, calling for urgent reforms to strengthen security and protect residents.
The four NBA branches in Jos, Bukuru, Pankshin and Shendam made the call at a joint press conference in Jos.
The lawyers said recent attacks in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Bokkos Local Government Areas had raised serious concerns about the safety of residents and the government’s ability to protect lives and property.

Lawyers Call For State Police
The NBA urged the Federal Government to move beyond discussions and take steps towards establishing state police.
The association also commended President Bola Tinubu for his recent visit to Plateau State to condole with residents over killings in Jos North Local Government Area, as well as his support for the creation of state police.

It, however, called for constitutional amendments that would allow states to have greater operational control over security within their territories.
According to the NBA, placing security on the Concurrent Legislative List would give state governments more room to respond to security threats in their communities.
More Support For Security Agencies
The lawyers also called for better welfare, equipment and operational support for security personnel.
They urged authorities to strengthen border surveillance and consider establishing a military formation around the Pai River Game Reserve, which the association said had become a security concern along the Plateau, Bauchi and Taraba borders.

The NBA also acknowledged security measures introduced by the Plateau State Government, including the strengthening of Operation Rainbow, training of neighbourhood watch personnel and the provision of security vehicles.
It called for further support for Operation Rainbow, police formations and forward operating bases across the state.
NBA Wants Better Response To Attacks
The association expressed concern over reports of delayed responses by security agencies during attacks.
It urged security personnel to improve their response time and rebuild public confidence through professionalism, accountability and effective coordination.
The NBA also called for investigations into cases where security personnel allegedly arrived at attack locations after attackers had already left.
Call For Faster Terrorism Trials
On the judicial front, the lawyers advocated faster trials for terrorism-related cases and stronger sanctions against lawyers who deliberately frustrate criminal proceedings.
They also called for greater transparency in the prosecution of terrorism suspects and those accused of sponsoring such crimes.
The NBA said its members would use their expertise in criminal justice, human rights and public-interest litigation to support victims, preserve evidence and promote accountability.
The association maintained that lasting peace in Plateau State would require respect for the rule of law, accountability and effective protection of citizens’ right to life.
It also warned that continued violence and loss of lives could weaken public confidence in government institutions and further threaten social cohesion.
