Former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, was granted permission to leave the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday by Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court. However, the court ruled that Emefiele had to stay in the country.
Emefiele, who had earlier been confined to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), had been granted bail in November in the amount of N300 million, along with two sureties in a similar sum. His lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mathew Burkaa, said Emefiele was released from the Kuje Correctional Centre after his lawyers perfected his bail conditions.
Emefiele was charged with six counts of procurement fraud and corruptly giving Sa’adatu Yaro, a CBN employee, a benefit by issuing a contract for the purchase of 43 cars for N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020. The fraud case, which was originally filed under six counts, has been expanded to 20 counts.
During the time he was held in custody in Kuje, the former governor was compelled to remain inside the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and turn in all of his travel documents to the court’s registrar.
