The Senior Pastor of Dunamis Church International, Pastor Paul Enenche, has inspected the scene of the collapsed Mission Ward branch of Dunamis Church International in Makurdi. Despite the tragedy, he expressed gratitude to God, acknowledging that the situation could have been far worse.
Resident Pastor Emmanuel Ahmed tragically lost his life in the collapse, while four others escaped unscathed. Pastor Enenche, accompanied by his wife, Dr. Becky, was led around the area by fellow pastors of the church. After a briefing, he addressed the gathering of church members and sympathisers, reassuring them that divine intervention had prevented a more catastrophic outcome.
Reflecting on the timing of the incident, Pastor Enenche expressed relief that the collapse did not occur during the bustling Sunday Church Service or the Independence Day Liberty Service.
“We thank God that it did not happen when the church was filled to overflow. But I can assure you that affliction will not rise again,” he said while urging everyone to find strength in their faith.
He also emphasised the church’s commitment to exercising due diligence in the construction of its structures moving forward.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, October 3, 2023, during a prayer vigil. Four individuals, including the pastor, were inside the church building at approximately 1 a.m. when the collapse occurred. Three of them managed to escape the wreckage.
“Only one person has been confirmed dead for now,” the Benue State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Anene Sewuese Catherine, said while confirming the incident.
The entire community remains in mourning as investigations continue into the devastating incident.
