A new clean-energy empowerment initiative is bringing hope and fresh opportunities to women in Lagos, with stakeholders highlighting the potential of renewable energy to improve livelihoods, reduce household challenges and support economic productivity.
The initiative, organised by Hopewell Initiatives for National Development in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) and BLUETTI Energy Nigeria Limited, was designed to promote access to clean and reliable energy among women and vulnerable members of society.
Speaking at a forum tagged “Empowering Women Through Clean Energy” at the Women Development Centre, Agege, Lagos, stakeholders stressed that alternative sources of electricity can make everyday life easier while creating opportunities for women to become more economically productive.
Representing the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, Deputy Director in the ministry, Mrs. Olubukola Ogunbanwo, described clean-energy access as an important part of women’s empowerment. She said it could reduce women’s vulnerability, lower the cost of economic activities and improve their wellbeing.
She added that the distribution of 100 solar energy products, alongside training on their use and management, would contribute to the welfare of beneficiaries and their communities.
The Founder of Hopewell Initiatives for National Development, Mrs. Bilquees Aiyepola, said the programme reflects the organisation’s commitment to improving women’s lives and strengthening communities through sustainable solutions. She explained that BLUETTI Energy Nigeria Limited was providing the solar products through its Lighting An African Family (LAAF) programme as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.
The BLUETTI delegation, led by its Business Manager, Mr. Chukwudi Onwa, said the LAAF programme was created to address energy-access challenges across Sub-Saharan Africa. Onwa said the company had distributed more than 15,000 units across the region as part of its CSR efforts.
According to BLUETTI representative Mr. Olanrewaju Ariwoola, each solar unit contains a solar panel, solar-powered battery, three light bulbs and lighting cables, and can provide lighting for a three-bedroom apartment when adequately charged.
Beyond the distribution of equipment, beneficiaries are also trained on how to use and manage the solar systems effectively.
For many women, reliable energy can mean more than simply having light. It can support small businesses, improve household activities, create more productive hours and provide greater independence.

The participation of government officials, community representatives and other stakeholders also highlights the importance of collaboration in addressing challenges faced by vulnerable groups.
By placing clean energy in the hands of women, the programme is providing an alternative source of power while creating room for hope, productivity and a brighter future for families and communities.
