Amnesty International Pushes for Students’ Second Chance

ABUJA, October 8, 2026 — A fresh opportunity for redemption may be within reach for 15 nursing students of Madonna University as Amnesty International calls on the institution to reconsider disciplinary actions imposed over a viral TikTok challenge.

The international human rights organisation on Wednesday urged the management of Madonna University, Rivers State, to reverse the expulsion of one final-year nursing student and the suspension of 14 others, describing the punishments as disproportionate to the offence.

The appeal offers renewed hope to the affected students, particularly those whose academic dreams and years of sacrifice now hang in the balance.

The controversy began after several nursing students appeared in a TikTok video dancing in their blue uniforms to the caption, “No sick o, na Gen Z full hospital.” The expression, which translates to “Don’t fall sick, the hospital is full of Gen Z healthcare practitioners,” attracted widespread attention after the video, uploaded in August, gained traction the following month.

The video showed the students dancing together on chairs in a waiting room and on the stairs of the university’s teaching hospital. Many Nigerians criticised the performance, arguing that the message could undermine public confidence in young healthcare professionals and raise concerns about how seriously they viewed their responsibilities.

However, Amnesty International insists that the university’s response should not permanently derail the students’ education.

“The expulsion and suspension are disproportionate,” the organisation said in its statement, urging the institution to prioritise dialogue and mediation.

The group also emphasised that students are entitled to freedom of expression, academic freedom and access to education. It warned that severe disciplinary measures could discourage students from exercising these rights.

The emotional consequences of the decision became more visible when one of the affected students, whose identity was not disclosed, posted a tearful appeal on social media.

“I’m one of the students affected and this pain is beyond words,” she said, explaining that years of sacrifices, sleepless nights and personal dreams could end because of the punishment.

“Please let us have a second chance,” she pleaded.

Her appeal has added a deeply personal dimension to the controversy, shifting attention from the viral video to the future of students who were approaching the end of their nursing education.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has also called for the expulsion to be rescinded. Its president, Akinteye Afese, argued that expulsion is a grave punishment capable of fundamentally changing a young person’s future beyond its immediate academic consequences.

Amnesty International’s intervention has intensified calls for the university to reconsider its decision and explore a resolution that balances institutional discipline with students’ rights and educational aspirations.

Although the university’s final response to the appeal was not stated in the report, the growing calls for reconsideration have placed renewed focus on the possibility of a second chance for the affected students.

For the students, their families and supporters, the central hope is that a controversial social media moment will not become the final chapter of years spent preparing for a career in healthcare.
