A stronger intelligence-led security approach is bringing renewed hope for peaceful local government elections in Kogi State, as the police intensify efforts to identify potential threats and coordinate rapid responses ahead of Saturday’s polls on October 17, 2026.

The Kogi State Police Command, under Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, psc, mni, has deployed intelligence assets to identified flashpoints as part of a broader strategy to prevent disruptions and protect voters, electoral activities and public property.
The announcement was contained in a press release dated October 15, 2026, signed by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat.
Beyond deploying personnel, the Command is strengthening communication and supervision to ensure security concerns receive prompt attention. CP Kankarofi has directed officers to provide hourly situation reports and immediately report incidents, allowing the leadership to monitor developments, coordinate operations and respond quickly when necessary.

The strategy also involves collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and other sister security agencies. A joint operational order has been issued, while deployed personnel have been briefed on their respective duties, responsibilities and election security guidelines.
To reinforce accountability, the Commissioner convened a strategic meeting with Divisional Police Officers, Heads of Departments and Area Commanders. Officers were instructed to maintain professionalism, remain impartial, respect citizens’ rights and exercise vigilance throughout the electoral process.

The initiative is significant because early threat detection, clear communication and cooperation among security agencies can help prevent security challenges from escalating. The Command also views the election exercise as an opportunity to improve coordination for future electoral engagements.
Meanwhile, residents have been urged to support the security arrangements by remaining peaceful, complying with lawful directives and reporting suspicious movements or emergencies. The police provided 07038329084 and 08152195982 for public reports.

As Kogi voters prepare to choose their local government representatives, the Command has assured them that measures are being taken to safeguard lives and property before, during and after the elections.
