The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected a petition to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, due to insufficient signatures.

According to INEC, the petitioners submitted 208,132 signatures, which translates to 43.86% of the registered voters in the constituency. However, this falls short of the constitutional requirement of 237,278 signatures, which is more than one-half of the registered voters.

The Commission had verified the signatures/thumbprints across 902 Polling Units in 57 Registration Areas and five Local Government Areas that make up the Senatorial District. Despite the petitioners’ efforts, they were unable to meet the required threshold, leading INEC to conclude that the petition has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution.

As a result, INEC has issued a Public Notice stating that no further action will be taken on the recall of the Senator. The notice is available on the Commission’s website and social media platforms for public information.
