In a symbolic ceremony held on April 22, 2025, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, Lieutenant Colonel Onyechi Appolonia Anele assumed command as the pioneer female Director of Army Public Relations (D APR) in an acting capacity. This milestone marks a significant step towards promoting diversity and gender inclusion in the Nigerian Army.

The ceremony marked the handing over from Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, Abuja. Lieutenant Colonel Anele expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for the opportunity to serve as the Army spokesperson. She pledged to remain loyal, committed, and professional in her new role.

The outgoing Director, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, highlighted the achievements of the Directorate under his stewardship, including specialized training for officers and soldiers, which have enhanced the Nigerian Army’s media reach and public perception. He expressed confidence that the incoming Director will build on the foundation laid and take the Directorate to greater heights.
