Nigeria and United States-based non-governmental organisations have agreed to strengthen collaboration through a new strategic partnership aimed at improving Nigeria’s global image and deepening cooperation between civil society groups in both countries.
The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by representatives of Nigeria U.S. based NGOs from 11 states in the United States to Nigeria’s Ambassador to the U.S., Ambassador Kayode Aree.
The meeting focused on bilateral and multilateral relations, civil society cooperation and ways to promote a more positive image of Nigeria internationally.
NGOs Seek Stronger Nigeria-US Civil Society Cooperation
Speaking at the meeting, Chief Executive Officer of the Global Organization on Sustainable Development Goals, Ambassador Dahiru Biu, called for closer coordination between U.S. based NGOs and Nigerian civil society organizations.
Ambassador Dahiru Biu said stronger collaboration would help improve Nigeria’s image abroad and strengthen engagement among Nigerians in the diaspora.
He also called for regular town hall meetings for Nigerians living in the United States to keep them informed about federal government policies and programmes.
Nigeria First Project Unveiled
Director General of the Civil Society Organizations on Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiatives (CSCHEI), Mr Kunle Yusuff, presented the Nigeria First project, describing it as an initiative endorsed by accredited civil society and community-based organisations.
According to Mr Kunle Yusuff, the project is designed to promote Nigeria positively both at home and internationally.
He also announced that the 2026 National Civil Society Organizations Summit is scheduled to hold from October 2 to 4.
Ambassador Highlights Economic Progress
Ambassador Kayode Aree highlighted several developments under the current administration, including what he described as greater naira stability, growth in the Nigerian Stock Exchange, improved economic stability, local government autonomy, increased investment in climate financing, and stronger trade and bilateral relations.

US Investors Show Interest in Nigeria
The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Dr Lee Karim, said preparations were also underway for the 2026 United Nations General Assembly.
Karim added that increasing interest from investors in the United States and South America seeking business partnerships with Nigerians was receiving positive attention.
New Nigeria-US Platform Agreed
At the end of the meeting, participants agreed to establish a strategic U.S.-Nigeria platform, to be coordinated by the Nigerian Embassy in the United States.
The platform will provide a framework for sustained communication, coordination, collaboration and cooperation among stakeholders in Nigeria and the United States.
