Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health challenges. In a letter dated December 1, 2025, addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Badaru stated that his decision was due to health reasons, which would impact his ability to effectively manage the Defence Ministry amidst Nigeria’s security challenges.

President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his service to the nation. The President is expected to notify the Senate of a replacement later this week.

Badaru, 63, served as a two-term governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023. His resignation comes amidst President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to elaborate on its scope in due course.
