The Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), has recorded a major milestone following the grant of pre-clinical accreditation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

The approval, according to a release by the University’s Information, Public Relations and Protocol Unit, came after a “rigorous accreditation exercise conducted on May 22, 2026,” by a 13-member MDCN team led by Dr. Nnameka Nwakama. The team carried out what the University described as a “painstaking and thorough assessment of the institution’s facilities, manpower, academic structure, and compliance with professional standards.”

The statement noted that the development “marks a major milestone in the history of FUHSO,” particularly as it was achieved within one year under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Aba Uba. Stakeholders, it added, have described the feat as “a testament to the transformative leadership and commitment of the current management toward repositioning the institution for excellence in medical education.”

In a related development, the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo (FUHSTHO), was also granted accreditation to commence its Housemanship Programme. The University said this “is expected to strengthen medical training and healthcare delivery within the institution and beyond.”

FUHSO VC, Prof. Uba, is excited.

Reacting to the dual achievements, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Uba, alongside the Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHO, Dr. Eyaofu Agida, expressed “profound appreciation to the MDCN team for the confidence reposed in both institutions.” They also pledged to “address and improve upon the few observable lapses identified during the exercise,” assuring the Council of their commitment to maintaining “the highest standards in medical education and healthcare service delivery.”

Also commenting, former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of FUHSO, Professor Abdullahi A. Abba, expressed confidence in the Vice-Chancellor’s ability to further transform the institution. He stated that “the remarkable progress recorded within a short period of one year demonstrates the determination and visionary leadership” of Professor Uba.

While commending the university’s management for the hospitality extended to the accreditation team, Professor Abba urged both FUHSO and FUHSTHO not to “betray the confidence reposed in them by the MDCN,” but rather sustain the momentum and continue improving standards required for medical training and healthcare practice in Nigeria.

The University’s statement described the accreditation as “a historic achievement for the university and the entire Idoma nation,” noting that it “opens a new chapter in the advancement of medical education and professional healthcare training in the region.”
