Parts of Abuja were submerged on Tuesday, September 1, after a heavy downpour triggered flooding and brought traffic to a standstill across several parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Airport Road and Lugbe corridors were among the worst affected, with flooding also reported around Nile University Junction, Airport Junction and Wuye.
Motorists were forced to slow down or look for alternative routes as floodwaters covered sections of major roads, leaving commuters stranded and worsening the already heavy traffic.
Residents Raise Fresh Concerns
The latest flooding has renewed concerns over Abuja’s preparedness for heavy rainfall, coming barely two weeks after a similar incident affected parts of the capital.
For many residents, the repeated flooding is becoming more than an inconvenience it is a growing threat to movement, businesses and livelihoods.
Residents and Nigerians online have pointed to blocked or poorly maintained drainage systems, construction on flood prone areas and the loss of natural waterways as some of the factors worsening the problem.
Mustapha Shika argued that maintaining drains alone would not solve the crisis, warning that development on green areas, floodplains and natural water channels had reduced the routes available for excess water.
“Some of these developments have to be reversed and the waterways restored. Otherwise, we will keep experiencing the same flooding year…” he said.
Another commenter, Variety Vault, blamed the situation on what he described as the conversion of Abuja’s green areas for permanent structures.
“This is just the beginning,” he said.
Adebayo Oluwatosin also questioned the continued obstruction of waterways, saying:
“When you allocate water way to your friends what do you expect? Water must find his level.”
For some residents, the impact was immediate.
Joy Israel said the flooding was so severe that commuters travelling from Kuje were forced to stop halfway through their journey.
The situation highlights how quickly heavy rainfall can disrupt movement across the capital, particularly along major routes connecting residential areas to the city centre.
Wike’s Demolitions Under Scrutiny
The flooding also comes against the backdrop of the FCT Administration’s ongoing demolition of structures allegedly built on waterways and drainage channels.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has repeatedly maintained that developments obstructing natural waterways contribute to flooding and must be removed to allow water to flow freely.
But Tuesday’s flooding has renewed calls for the government to look beyond demolitions and adopt a broader flood-control strategy.
Residents are demanding better drainage infrastructure, regular maintenance of existing waterways, stricter enforcement of planning regulations and the restoration of natural drainage channels.

Questions Over ₦2.3tn FCT Budget
The latest flooding has raised fresh questions about the FCT’s ₦2.3 trillion 2026 budget, particularly how much is going into drainage, flood control and infrastructure maintenance.
The flooding across parts of Abuja, including Airport Road, Lugbe and Lokogoma, has also renewed concerns over blocked waterways, illegal developments and poor enforcement of the Abuja Master Plan.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike recently suspended an FCDA director over alleged illegal approvals for developments on waterways, while the administration has ordered action against structures obstructing drainage channels.
For residents, the recurring floods raise a simple question with such a huge budget, are enough resources being invested in preventing floods and protecting communities?
Stakeholders are calling for regular drainage desilting, stronger enforcement against encroachment and urgent action to protect Abuja’s waterways.
