A powerful tribute to Nigeria’s journalism heritage is on the horizon as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) prepares to honour 20 outstanding media professionals at its 2026 Milestone Recognition of Media Icons in Nigeria.
Scheduled to take place in Abuja on a date and at a venue yet to be announced, the annual event will celebrate distinguished journalists from print and electronic media whose achievements have helped shape national conversations and strengthen the country’s media industry.
This year’s ceremony will be particularly significant because it coincides with the commemoration of 71 years since the establishment of the NUJ, making it an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of journalists to Nigeria’s development, democratic progress and public accountability.

Otunba Gbenga Onayiga, Chairman of the National Organising Committee, said the event would bring together leading figures from media, business and entertainment, alongside major public personalities and senior government officials.
He added that the honourees were carefully selected from different parts of the country based on their long-standing achievements and contributions to journalism. Two state governors who have demonstrated exceptional support for media development will also be recognised.
The event is being organised under the national leadership of NUJ President Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, whose administration continues to promote the recognition of media professionals and their contributions to society.
One of the most inspiring aspects of the initiative is its emphasis on celebrating distinguished journalists while they are still alive. Rather than waiting until their passing, the NUJ seeks to acknowledge the time, talent, resources and sacrifices these professionals have invested in the journalism profession.
The recognition also provides an opportunity to inspire younger journalists by showcasing the careers of individuals who have built lasting reputations through professional commitment and service.
Past recipients demonstrate the breadth of talent and influence represented by the initiative. They include Pa Sam Amuka-Pemu, publisher of Vanguard; Dr John Momoh, Chairman of Channels Media Group; Ray Ekpu; Aremo Olusegun Osoba; Professor Umaru Pate; Senator Chris Anyanwu; Dr Danladi Bako; and Comfort Obi. The late Dr Raymond Dokpesi, former chairman of Daar Communications, was also among those previously recognised.

Public officials who have supported media development have featured in earlier editions, including Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Bassey Eno, recognised for media infrastructure development, and Katsina State Governor Mallam Dikko Radda, honoured for his workers- and media-friendly disposition.
NUJ President Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi has described the media as the “custodian of democratic narratives,” a reminder of journalism’s role in informing citizens, scrutinising public institutions and preserving the integrity of public discourse.
With the 2026 edition expected to attract influential personalities from across Nigeria, the recognition promises to celebrate more than individual achievements. It will also highlight the importance of credible journalism, responsible media leadership and the preservation of Nigeria’s rich media heritage.
As the country approaches this milestone celebration, the spotlight will turn to the men and women whose dedication has helped tell Nigeria’s story and shape its public consciousness.
