Nigeria’s nonprofit sector is emerging as a significant contributor to the national economy, generating an estimated ₦16.4 billion to ₦17.5 billion in annual economic activity, according to a new report released by the Nigeria Network of NGOs (NNNGO).

Titled The Economic Impact of Nonprofits in Nigeria, the report measures the economic contribution of 4,234 NNNGO member organisations operating across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Its findings challenge the perception that nonprofits exist solely to provide social services, highlighting their role as employers, consumers of local goods and services, and drivers of wider economic activity.

According to the report, the organisations collectively generate at least ₦11.7 billion in annual operating income, with an estimated ₦12.5 billion across the full membership. When the effects of wages and supply-chain spending are included using a conservative multiplier of 1.4, their total annual economic footprint rises to between ₦16.4 billion and ₦17.5 billion. The report places the plausible range between ₦14 billion and ₦22.5 billion.

“Nigeria’s nonprofits are not merely providers of social services. They are serious economic actors, employers, customers of local businesses, and generators of further activity across every state,” said Oyebisi Babatunde Oluseyi, Executive Director of NNNGO.

The report estimates that the sector supports between 3,100 and 6,900 full-time-equivalent paid positions, alongside volunteer contributions equivalent to approximately 2,700 additional posts. Beyond employment, nonprofit activities sustain demand for transport, hospitality, aviation, catering, printing, professional services, commercial space and telecommunications.

Commercial space expenditure alone is estimated at between ₦1.3 billion and ₦3.2 billion annually, while nonprofit events generate an estimated ₦900 million to ₦2.7 billion in annual local spending.

Education-focused organisations account for the largest pool of resources, with ₦4.84 billion, while advocacy organisations record the highest average capitalisation at ₦3.67 million.

The report also highlights the sector’s contribution to sustainable development. Documented impact features from NNNGO members address 12 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with local organisations frequently reaching communities that government institutions and markets struggle to serve effectively.

The findings draw on four evidence sources: NNNGO’s membership database, an inventory of nonprofit and civil society events held between 2023 and mid-2026, a verified review of Nigerian university programme pages, and documented member impact features mapped to the Sustainable Development Goals.

However, NNNGO acknowledges that the figures are not a complete measurement of Nigeria’s entire nonprofit sector. Budgets are self-reported in bands rather than audited, some estimates use conservative minimum values, and the research covers one major network rather than every nonprofit operating in the country.

Oluseyi described the report as the beginning of a national conversation about recognising and measuring the sector’s full contribution.

The report further notes that the economic calculations cannot fully capture the social value nonprofits create through education, healthcare, livelihoods, inclusion, democracy and the rule of law.
