Shia Muslims worldwide observe the last Friday of every Ramadan as International Quds Day, demonstrating solidarity with Palestinians.

In Nigeria, the Islamic Movement, led by Shaikh Yaqoub El-Zazaky, traditionally participates in street marches across cities.

However, the 2025 Abuja march turned violent, with clashes between participants and the Nigerian Army, resulting in fatalities among the Shia protesters.

Eyewitnesses report that the peaceful procession was disrupted by the military, leading to chaos and bloodshed.

The Islamic Movement has condemned the Army’s actions, accusing them of unjustly attacking unarmed civilians.

International Quds Day was initiated by Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, in 1979 to express support for the Palestinian struggle against Israeli occupation.

The day has since become an annual event, observed globally by Shia Muslims and other supporters of the Palestinian cause.

The incident has sparked widespread concern and outrage among human rights groups and the Shia community in Nigeria, who demand justice for the victims and an end to the military’s excessive use of force against unarmed protesters.
