Why I Invested

Amadi said the decision to invest was driven by an interest in understanding how the capital market works rather than simply investing because of the Dangote name.

I wanted to understand what it feels like to put my money into a company and actually become a small part-owner of that business, Amadi said

She said the ₦40,000 invested represents a significant amount of money for her and required careful consideration before subscribing to the offer.

According to her, the investment is also an opportunity to learn how share prices move, how companies perform and what it means to own shares in a major Nigerian business.

IPO Expected to Raise ₦2.15 Trillion

The Dangote Refinery offer could raise about ₦2.15 trillion if fully subscribed, making it a significant transaction for Nigeria’s capital market.

The Nigerian Exchange Group has described the offer as the first petroleum refinery to be offered to investors on the Nigerian stock market in the Exchange’s 66-year history.

The scale of the transaction has attracted attention from investors, particularly those seeking exposure to one of Nigeria’s largest industrial projects.

Investment Comes With Risks

Amadi acknowledged that investing in the refinery does not guarantee financial returns.

She noted that the IPO documentation warns investors that the value of shares can rise or fall and that investors could lose some or all of their investment.

Dividends are also not guaranteed.

For Amadi, these risks were an important part of the decision to invest.

“I am not investing because I believe I will automatically become wealthy from it. I am investing because I want to learn,” she said

Focus on Financial Literacy

The investment has also prompted Amadi to highlight the need for greater financial literacy among young Nigerians.

She said the minimum subscription of ₦5,250 provides an entry point for individuals who may not have large amounts of money to participate in the offer, but stressed that accessibility does not remove the need for investors to understand the risks involved.

The IPO information advises prospective investors to read the prospectus and understand the terms and risks before subscribing.

What Happens Next?

Amadi said she intends to monitor the performance of her investment over time rather than judge it by short-term movements in share value.

“I would like to see my ₦40,000 grow, but I am also approaching the investment with patience,” she said.

She said the investment would allow her to follow the company’s performance and gain a better understanding of how the Nigerian capital market operates.

For her, the ₦40,000 investment represents an entry point into investing and an opportunity to learn from the experience while accepting the possibility of financial loss.
