For the pupils of Tinubu Methodist Primary School on Bank Anthony Street, Lagos Island, going to school now comes with a little more comfort and a reason to smile.
What was once a sanitation challenge has received a fresh transformation, following the provision of 11 newly rebuilt toilet facilities and other sanitary facilities by the Lions International Lagos, Ikoyi Club.
The project has given the school more than improved toilet facilities. It has created a cleaner and more decent environment where children can learn, play and grow with greater comfort.
The facilities were inaugurated on Tuesday in an atmosphere filled with appreciation, as pupils of the school expressed their gratitude through songs.
For the Lions Club, the project was driven by a simple but important principle: service to humanity.
The Immediate Past President of Lions Club Ikoyi and project coordinator, Mrs. Pat Jinadu, said the decision to intervene came after the club saw the poor state of the school’s existing toilet facilities.
According to her, the project went beyond renovation because the old toilets were completely run down and had to be rebuilt from scratch.
Jinadu explained that the environment was also dirty when the club arrived, making cleaning an important part of the intervention.
The project was supported through funds raised from friends and family, including generous contributions from some of her husband’s friends.

For Jinadu, the initiative demonstrates that improving communities is a shared responsibility.
The Lions Club’s intervention was welcomed by the Lagos Island Local Government Council. Its representative, Oladumoye Tomi, expressed happiness over the project, noting that it was difficult to see young pupils go for long periods without adequate toilet facilities.
He described the intervention as a significant contribution to society, particularly because children are the future leaders of the country.
Representing the District Convener, Elder Johnson Efunkomaya, the Vice District Governor, Oladele Lamidi, also commended the Ikoyi Lions Club for the initiative.
He said the facilities would help provide the pupils with a more decent learning environment and urged the children to use them properly and keep them clean.
Other guests at the event also emphasized the connection between sanitation, health and education.
Bola Abioye described the project as an investment in the future of the pupils, stressing that children who learn in an unclean environment may be exposed to sickness and disease.
The First Vice-President of the Ikoyi Lions Club, Afolabi Balogun, similarly emphasized the importance of sanitation, using an analogy about the different parts of the human body to demonstrate what happens when an important part is neglected.
His message was simple: every part of a system matters, and sanitation facilities are essential to maintaining a healthy environment.
At the centre of the celebration, however, were the pupils themselves.
Their songs of appreciation brought a joyful touch to the occasion and reflected what the new facilities mean to them: a cleaner environment, improved comfort and a school experience that feels a little brighter.
Head Teacher Sanusi Shadiat expressed appreciation to the Lions Club for the gesture.
The transformation at Tinubu Methodist Primary School shows how community-driven interventions can make everyday life better for children. A toilet facility may appear simple, but for a child spending hours at school, access to a clean and functional one can make a meaningful difference.
And for the pupils who now have these facilities to call their own, the change comes with something even more valuable: the happiness of knowing that someone cared enough to make their school a better place.
