A fresh opportunity is opening for young women in Lagos to understand government, influence public policy and take a more active role in civic life as HerGovernment launches its inaugural cohort.
Supported by the Nigeria Youths Future Fund (NYFF), the experiential civic education initiative officially opened Cohort 1 on October 2, 2026, with a two-month programme scheduled to run from October to November.
The initiative, founded by Precious Obiabunmo, is designed to make governance more accessible and relatable to young women by taking participants beyond the traditional classroom and giving them opportunities to understand how public institutions work in practice.

For many young people, government and public policy can appear distant or complicated. HerGovernment is seeking to change that experience by equipping participants with practical knowledge about government structures, public decision-making and civic participation.
The programme is open to young women aged 18 to 35 who live in Lagos and have an interest in government, public policy and civic engagement.
Cohort 1 will be delivered through three major stages: interactive online workshops, a physical visit to selected government institutions and an online advocacy campaign.
The first stage will introduce participants to key areas including Government 101, Women, Public Policy & Power, Engage with Government and Turning Experience to Civic Action.
Through these sessions, participants will learn how government operates, examine how public policies affect women and their communities, and explore practical ways of engaging government institutions and decision-makers.
The workshops will be facilitated by Victoria Oladipo, Bukola Taiwo, Ajifa Solomon and Cynthia Akujobi, who will bring their experience in governance, public policy, civic engagement and advocacy to the programme.
But the learning will not stop online.
Participants will also embark on a one-day physical visit to selected government institutions, where they will observe public-sector processes, interact with officials and gain firsthand insight into how government institutions operate.
The final stage will challenge participants to put their new knowledge into action through an online advocacy campaign. They will use digital platforms to create awareness and engage wider audiences around governance and public policy issues affecting women and their communities.

Obiabunmo said the initiative was created to help young women see governance not as something distant, but as a system they can understand and participate in.
“With HerGovernment, we want to create a space where young women can learn about government, experience public institutions firsthand and find practical ways to participate in civic life,” she said.
By combining education, institutional exposure and advocacy, HerGovernment is opening a new pathway for young women to understand the systems shaping their communities and discover meaningful ways to become part of civic life.
Applications for Cohort 1 are currently open to eligible young women in Lagos.
