UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE — Hope is reaching residents affected by recent flooding in Akwa Ibom State as the state government begins distributing food and essential household supplies to four local government areas in a renewed effort to ease the hardship caused by the disaster.
The intervention, announced in a government press release, covers Uyo, Itu, Abak and Uruan Local Government Areas, where residents affected by flooding are expected to benefit from food and non-food relief materials provided through a partnership between the Akwa Ibom State Government and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The relief items include 25-kilogram bags of rice, beans, maize, noodles, wrappers, salt, sugar, vegetable oil and toiletries. These supplies are intended to support affected households whose food supplies, household resources and livelihoods may have been disrupted by the flooding.

The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, handed over the materials on behalf of Governor Umo Eno during the distribution exercise. She explained that the intervention reflected the government’s responsibility to support residents facing difficulties following natural disasters.
According to Ibanga, flooding is an unfortunate event that communities cannot always prevent, but government has a responsibility to respond by reaching affected residents with the necessary assistance.
The partnership with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also highlights the role of collaboration between government and humanitarian organisations in responding to community needs and providing practical support during difficult times.

For families affected by flooding, access to essential food items and household supplies can provide immediate relief as they work to recover from the disruption caused by the disaster. However, the effectiveness of the intervention will depend partly on ensuring that assistance reaches the people who need it most.
To support this objective, Ibanga urged the benefiting local government councils to ensure that the materials were distributed to the intended beneficiaries, particularly residents whose livelihoods and household resources had been affected.

Officials representing the four local government chairmen welcomed the intervention and expressed appreciation to the state government for its support. They assured the commissioner that the items would be distributed to the appropriate beneficiaries.
In Abak, the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, also commended Governor Eno for extending the intervention to flood-affected residents in the area.

The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs was accompanied by the General Manager of the Akwa Ibom State Bulk Purchase Agency, Hon. Unyime Etim, during the handover exercise.
As the relief materials move towards affected households, the intervention offers an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between government, humanitarian partners and local authorities, ensuring that vulnerable residents receive timely assistance and the support they need to begin rebuilding their lives.
