ACTIONAID QUESTIONS POVERTY IMPACT OF ECONOMIC GROWTH

What happened: On 12 October, ActionAid Nigeria Country Director Dr Andrew Mamedu reacted to the World Bank’s October 2026 Nigeria Development Update, which reported 4.2% GDP growth in the first half of 2026. Federation revenues also rose by 69% in real terms between 2023 and 2025.

    • NDLEA CHIEF CALLS FOR GREATER MENTAL HEALTH INVESTMENT
    • NAFDAC WARNS AGAINST VIRAL FOOD-SAFETY CLAIMS
    • CIVIL SOCIETY URGES TRANSPARENCY OVER INEC REDEPLOYMENTS
    • COURT OF APPEAL ORDERS REASSIGNMENT IN SERAP CASES
    • SCOLIOSIS ADVOCATES HIGHLIGHT EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

Why it matters: ActionAid warned that stabilising poverty is not the same as reducing it, citing rising living costs and declining purchasing power.

Implication: NGOs should monitor public spending and whether increased revenues translate into better services and living standards.

NDLEA CHIEF CALLS FOR GREATER MENTAL HEALTH INVESTMENT

What happened: On 13 October, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) addressed the fifth Conversation Conference at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, organised by the Intersect Consortium. He linked substance abuse with untreated trauma, depression and psychological distress.

Why it matters: The NDLEA reported that more than 53,843 people received treatment at its 31 rehabilitation facilities over five years.

Implication: Development partners should invest in affordable mental healthcare, community rehabilitation and sustainable livelihood programmes.

NAFDAC WARNS AGAINST VIRAL FOOD-SAFETY CLAIMS

What happened: On 13 October in Lagos, NAFDAC Director-General Professor Mojisola Adeyeye challenged viral social media videos alleging widespread substandard food products during the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology’s 50th conference and AGM.

Why it matters: Misinformation can trigger public panic, while inadequate product oversight remains a genuine safety concern. Adeyeye called for stronger inter-agency collaboration and consumer reporting.

Implication: Media outlets should verify claims with regulators and explain how suspected unsafe products can be reported.

CIVIL SOCIETY URGES TRANSPARENCY OVER INEC REDEPLOYMENTS

What happened: On 13 October, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations Against Corruption, led by President Bola Ademola and National Secretary Abdulfatah Aliyu, urged caution over allegations of questionable INEC staff redeployments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Why it matters: Unverified allegations can undermine electoral trust, while unexplained administrative decisions may fuel suspicion.

Implication: INEC should clarify relevant decisions, and civic groups should pursue evidence-based scrutiny.

COURT OF APPEAL ORDERS REASSIGNMENT IN SERAP CASES

What happened: On 13 October, the Court of Appeal returned two related appeals involving the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) for reassignment to a new panel. It also vacated earlier proceedings in one appeal.

Why it matters: The proceedings raise questions about judicial procedure and civic freedoms. The decision was procedural, not a final judgment on the underlying dispute.

Implication: Rights organisations and journalists should follow the next proceedings and report developments accurately.

            SCOLIOSIS ADVOCATES HIGHLIGHT EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

What happened: At a programme organised around scoliosis support, Scoliosis Focus Support Group founder Dr Ayomide Akintan-Adejuwon and clinical psychologist Mr Damilare Ashani encouraged patients to seek emotional support. Orthopaedic and physiotherapy specialists discussed treatment, rehabilitation and stigma.

Why it matters: Body-image concerns, bullying and social isolation can affect adolescents’ confidence, mental health and treatment adherence.

Implication: Healthcare providers, families and schools should combine physical treatment with psychological support and anti-bullying measures.

              WATCH CLOSELY

Nigeria’s growing revenues will face increasing scrutiny over whether they deliver measurable improvements in poverty reduction, healthcare, education and public accountability.

              HIDDEN OPPORTUNITY

NGOs and development communicators can strengthen funding proposals by documenting community-level outcomes with credible data and beneficiary experiences.

              OVERLOOKED RISK

Misinformation and weak institutional communication can erode public trust. Timely clarification, independent verification and transparent reporting are essential.
