Paradigm Initiative Equips Journalists Against Disinformation

Journalists and media practitioners in Africa are set to gain fresh support in the fight against disinformation as Paradigm Initiative (PIN) advances information integrity through specialised training and research activities in Dakar, Senegal.

The digital rights organisation is participating in the 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), taking place at the King Fahd Palace Hotel from October 12 to 21, 2026. As part of its programme, PIN is organising activities designed to strengthen responsible reporting, improve public access to reliable information and address the challenges posed by misleading online content.

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, PIN is scheduled to host a Digital Rights Academy for journalists and media practitioners, with training focused on information integrity. The initiative is intended to strengthen media professionals’ capacity to navigate the digital information environment and better understand the importance of reliable information in public communication.

The programme will be followed on Thursday, October 15, by a session drawing on PIN’s research project, Africa Facing Down Disinformation. During the session, the organisation will present findings on information disorders in Senegal and highlight key recommendations for addressing the problem.

These activities form part of PIN’s broader engagement at the African Commission, where it is also raising concerns about digital rights violations, internet freedom, the slow development of artificial intelligence policies, media freedom and children’s rights online.

Represented by Bridgette Ndlovu, Partnerships and Engagements Officer, and Moussa Waly SENE, Programmes Officer for Francophone Africa, PIN is using evidence from its digital rights monitoring and Londa report to inform advocacy and discussions on human rights across the continent.

The organisation is also collaborating with the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) on digital rights and election monitoring. Their October 13 session is exploring how national human rights institutions can monitor elections using PIN’s Digital Rights and Elections in Africa Monitor Toolkit (DREAMT). It will also feature The Signal, a short film on digital accessibility and inclusion.

By combining training, research and policy advocacy, PIN is highlighting the importance of equipping media professionals and institutions with the knowledge needed to respond to information disorders.

The effort comes at a time when digital platforms play an increasingly important role in shaping public conversations, civic participation and access to information. Strengthening information integrity can help journalists and other stakeholders make better-informed decisions and support more responsible public discourse.

Through its activities in Dakar, Paradigm Initiative is promoting a practical approach to digital rights protection—one that combines stronger safeguards with the skills, evidence and collaboration needed to build a more trustworthy digital information environment across Africa.
