₦126.46BN ELECTORAL SPENDING UNDER SCRUTINY
WHAT HAPPENED: SERAP has given INEC seven days to explain alleged financial irregularities involving ₦126.46bn in electoral spending. The demand, issued by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, follows findings in the Auditor-General’s 2023 audited report published on 7 August 2026.
WHY IT MATTERS: The allegations include more than ₦112.15bn spent on electoral materials without evidence of competitive procurement.

KADUNA MEDIA OUTLET RAID RAISES PRESS-FREEDOM CONCERNS
WHAT HAPPENED: Amnesty International Nigeria says police allegedly invaded JKD TV/Hamada Radio Network in Kaduna over the weekend and arrested General Manager Charles Abah and a security guard. Police were reportedly seeking journalist Zainab Salihu Yabagi over a video concerning presidential adviser Ibrahim Kabir Masari.
WHY IT MATTERS: The incident places renewed attention on journalist safety and the operating space for independent media.

DIPHTHERIA DEATHS TRIGGER FCT HEALTH ALERT
WHAT HAPPENED: ActionAid Nigeria Country Director Dr Andrew Mamedu has warned about reported diphtheria deaths involving two children in Abuja/FCT and urged urgent contact tracing, testing, vaccination and surveillance.

NGO SECTOR ENTERS NEW ACCOUNTABILITY ERA
WHAT HAPPENED: Nigeria’s NGO sector is facing heightened scrutiny amid reported investigations into USAID-related funds and a proposed Foreign Assistance, Grants, Donations, Humanitarian Support and Concessional Financing Management Bill. The Senate passed the bill’s second reading in 2026.
WHY IT MATTERS: The proposal could create a Foreign Aid Regulatory Commission and introduce registration and public-disclosure requirements.
IMPLICATION: NGOs should strengthen financial documentation, donor reporting, governance and evidence systems while monitoring possible effects on civic space.
NELFUND PUTS ₦1.08BN INTO NURSING EDUCATION
WHAT HAPPENED: NELFUND has disbursed ₦1.08bn to 5,381 nursing and midwifery students across 21 institutions for the 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 academic sessions. Funding rose from ₦59.4m to ₦811.9m across the three years.
WHY IT MATTERS: The intervention targets the pipeline of Nigeria’s future healthcare workforce, with young women forming the majority of beneficiaries.
IMPLICATION: Education financing is increasingly becoming a direct investment in health-system capacity.
SAFE-SCHOOL FUNDING STILL LAGS SECURITY NEEDS
WHAT HAPPENED: More than 45 million pupils are returning to school while a UBEC audit cited in the report says 78% of public schools lack perimeter fencing and 65% lack guards. The Safe Schools programme was projected at ₦144.8bn, but releases have fallen short.
