For more than two decades, Olanrewaju Suraju has been involved in Nigeria’s civil society movement, advocating for human rights, transparency, good governance and accountability while supporting efforts to address corruption and environmental challenges.
As Chairman of the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) and the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), Olanrewaju Suraju has built a career around public interest advocacy, working with civil society organisations, development agencies and other institutions in Nigeria and across Africa.
His journey into activism began during his university days, when he served as Students’ Union President at Yaba College of Technology. His involvement in student activism later brought him into conflict with the military government of the late General Sani Abacha.
During the struggle against military rule in the 1990s, Olanrewaju Suraju was detained and rusticated from the institution for one year over his activities as a student union leader.
The experience became an important part of his involvement in the wider struggle for democratic governance and the protection of citizens’ rights.

From Student Activism To Civil Society Leadership
Over the course of approximately 23 years of professional experience, Olanrewaju Suraju has helped establish, supported and served on the boards of several civil society organisations, networks and coalitions.
His work has involved collaboration with international non-governmental organisations, development agencies, law enforcement bodies and intergovernmental institutions.

As a public commentator, campaigner and analyst, he has contributed to national and international discussions on human rights, public accountability, citizen participation and governance.
He has also served as a resource person on issues including networking, community mobilisation, transparency and the role of citizens in demanding accountability from public institutions.
His work reflects an approach to advocacy that combines public engagement, research, policy dialogue and institutional accountability.
Academic Training And Professional Development
Olanrewaju Suraju’s professional experience is supported by postgraduate studies in development, law and social justice at the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands, NGO Management at the University of Manchester, and Public Administration at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ogun State.
This academic background has complemented his work with civil society organisations and development partners, particularly in areas involving governance, institutional reform and social justice.
His career has also extended beyond traditional human rights advocacy to include food security, anti-corruption campaigns, leadership development and environmental sustainability.
Leading The Fight Against Corruption
As Chairman of HEDA Resource Centre, Olanrewaju Suraju has been associated with campaigns seeking greater transparency in public institutions and accountability in the management of Nigeria’s resources.
HEDA works on issues including anti-corruption, environmental protection, food security and sustainable development, using advocacy, research, public engagement and legal action to advance its objectives.

The organisation has also raised concerns about the relationship between corruption, public resource management and development outcomes.
Olanrewaju Suraju has repeatedly highlighted the importance of transparent governance and effective anti-corruption measures.
In a statement delivered at the 10th Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in December 2023, he described corruption as a major obstacle to progress, justice and equality.
He argued that the diversion of public resources undermines essential services and places additional burdens on vulnerable populations.
His position reflects a central concern of his advocacy: public resources should serve citizens, and institutions entrusted with managing them must be accountable.
Through CSNAC, which he chairs, Olanrewaju Suraju has also been involved in broader civil society efforts to strengthen anti-corruption advocacy and promote accountability across public institutions.
Expanding His Work To Climate And Environmental Justice
Olanrewaju Suraju’s advocacy has increasingly connected environmental protection with questions of governance, accountability and social justice.
In his role as Climate Advisor for Africa with CHRE, he works on Africa-focused climate and environmental research and advocacy, supporting policy approaches aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening climate action across the continent.

The work also focuses on environmental sustainability and climate equity, including the need for climate policies to reflect the circumstances and development priorities of African countries.
His environmental advocacy aligns with HEDA’s wider work on environmental governance, climate change and the protection of communities affected by environmental degradation.
For Nigeria and other African countries, these issues are closely connected to development, public health, livelihoods and the responsible management of natural resources.
Olanrewaju Suraju’s work therefore brings together two areas that are often treated separately the demand for accountable institutions and the need to protect the environment for present and future generations.
A significant part of Olanrewaju Suraju’s career has involved supporting collaboration among civil society organisations and other stakeholders working towards common development goals.
Through board service, coalition building and professional engagements, he has contributed to efforts to strengthen advocacy networks and create platforms for collective action.
His experience working with development agencies, international NGOs, law enforcement institutions and intergovernmental bodies has also exposed him to different approaches to human rights protection, governance reform and citizen participation.
These relationships have helped position his work within broader national and international conversations about accountability, sustainable development and institutional responsibility.
A Continuing Commitment To Public Accountability
From his days as a student union leader during military rule to his current responsibilities in civil society and climate advocacy, Olanrewaju Suraju’s career has remained closely linked to questions of justice, public responsibility and development.
His work spans anti-corruption campaigns, human rights, food security, environmental protection and governance, reflecting the interconnected challenges facing Nigeria and other African countries.
As debates continue over corruption, public resource management, climate change and the quality of governance, his advocacy remains focused on the role of institutions and citizens in addressing these challenges.
For Olanrewaju Suraju, the issues are connected: accountable leadership, respect for human rights and responsible environmental management are all important to building a society in which public resources and development opportunities benefit the people they are meant to serve.
