Nigeria is set to take a significant step towards connecting African audiences through cinema as the Film Africa Network (FAN) launches its Continental Film Screening Project in Abuja with the award-winning documentary Comrade Tambo’s London Recruits.

The maiden screening, scheduled for Tuesday, 27 October 2027, at 2 p.m., will take place at the main campus of BAZE University, Abuja, as part of FAN’s “Africa Watches Together” campaign. Attendance is free, offering film enthusiasts an opportunity to experience a powerful African historical story while supporting efforts to strengthen the circulation of African films across the continent.

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) and Driving Park Limited. It seeks to address a longstanding challenge facing African cinema: the limited movement of African films between countries on the continent, despite the richness of the stories they tell.

Opening the project with Comrade Tambo’s London Recruits brings a compelling historical dimension to the campaign. The South African/Welsh documentary explores espionage, courage and solidarity during the anti-apartheid struggle, highlighting the role of international support in the fight against racial oppression in South Africa.

For FAN, the screening represents more than a film exhibition. It is an opportunity to demonstrate that African stories can attract audiences across borders when platforms are created to make them accessible.

FAN Nigeria Country Representative, Osezua Stephen-Imobhio, arrived in Abuja on Monday morning to ensure that the technical preparations for the screening were in place. He expressed confidence that the initiative would help bridge the gap between African filmmakers and audiences across the continent.

For years, African films have struggled to travel within Africa. This campaign bridges that gap,

Stephen-Imobhio said, adding that preparations had been made to provide a seamless screening experience.

He also invited film enthusiasts in Abuja to attend the event and become part of what he described as a historic screening.

As part of the engagement, a FAN delegation is expected to pay a courtesy visit to BAZE University Founder, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, and the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun Adeniyi.

The launch signals a fresh opportunity to celebrate African creativity, preserve important historical memories and encourage audiences to discover stories from across the continent.

With free admission and a documentary centred on courage and collective action, “Africa Watches Together” begins with a message of connection: African stories deserve to be seen, shared and celebrated by Africans everywhere.
