The national president of the Akpa Community Development Association (ACDA), Mr. Maurice Agor Adiga, has officially declared the 29th of December as Akweya Day.
The decision was made during the National Conference of ACDA, convened on March 30, 2024, in Onyuweyi Akpa District, Otukpo Local Government, Benue State.
Mr. Adiga, re-elected for a second term, emphasised his commitment to fostering unity within the Akweya community. He announced plans to establish a unified national day for all Akweya villages, discouraging individual celebrations of events such as the New Yam festival celebrated by individual villages in Akweya.
“This year’s Akweya’s “Okwuchi’ festival will be celebrated uniformly,” Mr. Adiga stated during the conference, highlighting the importance of collective participation.
He further acknowledged the support of key figures within the community, including the District Head of Akweya, HRH Pst. Wilson Ahola, Hon. Kennedy Angbo, Abba Adaudu, Rapheal Idoko, Dr. Sam Ogri, Hon. Michael Oglegba, David Akoji, Hon. Simple Odeh, Prof. Ejembi Egiri, and AkweyaTV.
The designation of Akweya Day aims to celebrate the cultural heritage of the Akweya Kingdom. Festivities will include lectures, inter-denominational Thanksgiving prayers, cultural displays, cooking competitions, fashion parades, and more.
The Akweya ethnic group, originating from the Akpa District of Otukpo LGA, identifies themselves as “sons of Akwu” and is also known as Akpa by non-indigenous communities. They are in Ogoja LGA, Cross River State, and Plateau State.
