Residents of Makurdi Metropolis have expressed joy over the ongoing construction of a flyover bridge at the high-level roundabout in Makurdi. Despite facing inconveniences such as road diversions, dusty areas, and other disruptions common to construction sites, residents have commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for his developmental efforts.
AkweyaTV’s Makurdi correspondent, Mr. Solace Angi, spoke with some selected residents of Makurdi around the construction site.
A trader, Terkirma Akir, who sells tomatoes, pepper, and onions at the high-level market, acknowledged the positive impact of the flyover construction while noting the temporary setback it has caused in market sales due to blocked roads.
“It is good they are building the flyover, but it has affected our sales as the road to the market is blocked, reducing the influx of customers. It’s been tough since we bought our stocks at a very exorbitant price because of the prevailing economic situation of the country,” he said.
Another resident, Oliver Emeka, hailed Governor Alia for achieving a historic milestone by erecting the first flyover in the state, anticipating its contribution to development and increased property value.
Ikechukwu Godwin, another trader at the market, acknowledged the disruption caused by the construction but stated that there would be long-term benefits for the community.
“When you see somebody doing something that will benefit everyone at the end of the day, you don’t worry or query the temporal setback caused by the process,” he declared.
Ayambua Isaac, also a Makurdi resident, congratulated Governor Alia for the ongoing project, foreseeing its positive impact on the state’s economy and potential to attract investors.
In an interview with a staff member of the construction company, Mr. Fidelis Chukwuma Ezade, an escalator operator with Bauhaus Global, reassured the public of the company’s commitment to delivering quality workmanship.
The government reported that the underpass project underwent rigorous procurement procedures and was awarded to Bauhaus Global Investment Nigeria Limited in December 2023 for six billion naira. The project is part of the state’s 2024 budget allocations for strategic road construction in Gboko and Makurdi.
