The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a vigilante group leader and two other members for allegedly torturing a man to death in the state.

According to police sources, the suspects were apprehended following reports that a man was unlawfully detained, brutally assaulted, and subjected to severe torture by members of a local vigilante group over allegations of wrongdoing. The victim reportedly died as a result of the injuries sustained during the torture.

The incident occurred in a community within Rivers State, where the vigilante group operates as part of local security efforts. However, police authorities said the suspects acted outside the law and violated the fundamental rights of the victim.

Confirming the arrests, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command stated that the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing investigation. The police condemned the act, stressing that no individual or group has the authority to torture or kill any person under the guise of community security.

“The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The Command will not tolerate any form of jungle justice or abuse of power by vigilante groups,” the police spokesperson said.

The police also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, urging communities to report suspected crimes to security agencies rather than resorting to self-help.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage within the community, with residents calling for justice for the victim and stricter oversight of vigilante groups operating in the state.

Human rights advocates have also condemned the killing, calling on authorities to ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable and that measures are put in place to prevent future abuses.

As investigations continue, the police assured the public of their commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights and lives of all citizens in Rivers State.
