NIGERIA’S DEVELOPMENT AGENDA: SKILLS, TRANSPARENCY, SECURITY AND INCLUSION TAKE CENTRE STAGE
KANO HANDS DANGOTE FOUNDATION 20 YEAR SKILLS CENTRE DEAL
What happened
On 18 August, the Kano State Government signed a 20 year MoU with the Aliko Dangote Foundation to manage and reposition the Aliko Dangote Skills Acquisition Centre. The agreement was signed by SSG Umar Farouk Ibrahim and Attorney General Abdulkareem Maude, with the Foundation represented by Sanusi Abdulkadir and Mustapha Umar.
Why it matters
The partnership aims to expand entrepreneurial and vocational training for Kano’s youth while bringing private philanthropic expertise into management of a public skills facility.
Implication
The deal could offer a model for government and foundation partnerships in youth employment
BUDGIT AND EZEKWESILI DEMAND GREATER TRANSPARENCY

What happened
On 18 August, civic tech organisation BudgIT urged the Federal Government to improve budget execution, auditing and procurement disclosure following concerns raised in the U.S. 2026 Fiscal Transparency Report. Former minister Oby Ezekwesili separately called for greater scrutiny of the £746 million UK backed Apapa and Tin Can ports financing arrangement.
Why it matters
Public infrastructure financing is increasingly facing demands for clearer contracts, borrowing terms, procurement processes and repayment obligations.
Implication
Civil society and development organisations have a growing role in independent public finance monitoring
PLATEAU ATTACK REIGNITES SECURITY AND HUMANITARIAN CONCERNS

What happened
At least 25 people were killed in an overnight attack in Mangu LGA, Plateau State, on 18 August, according to Reuters. The violence has also triggered renewed international attention, with U.S. Congressman Riley Moore arguing against lifting Nigeria’s religious freedom designation.
Why it matters
Persistent insecurity threatens lives, livelihoods, displacement response and community trust while increasing diplomatic pressure on Nigeria.
Implication
Humanitarian actors need stronger early warning, civilian protection and community response systems

What happened
The Nigeria Police Force, led by IGP Olatunji Disu, will launch its National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative in Abuja from 20 to 22 August. The programme will address leadership, enterprise, responsible citizenship and digital responsibility, including campaigns against political thuggery and misinformation.

Why it matters
The focus is shifting from broad gender inclusion toward measurable access to finance, enterprise and wealth creation.
Implication
Women focused organisations should align programmes with enterprise finance, digital skills and market access

What happened
On 18 August, Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria and Junior Achievement Nigeria announced a partnership to provide digital skills training to more than 600 young Nigerians.
Why it matters
Corporate social investment is increasingly targeting employability, digital capability and measurable youth outcomes.
Implication
NGOs with strong youth employment results can position themselves for deeper corporate partnerships
WATCH CLOSELY
2027 IS BECOMING A DEVELOPMENT ISSUE
Economic hardship, insecurity, youth engagement and public trust are likely to increasingly shape Nigeria’s political environment. Development organisations should prepare for greater scrutiny of government performance and programme impact.
HIDDEN OPPORTUNITY
BUILD THE EVIDENCE LAYER
Track money to programme to beneficiary to result. NGOs, researchers and media organisations can create simple project trackers and evidence based stories that make development impact easier to verify.
OVERLOOKED RISK
THE CREDIBILITY GAP
If citizens cannot distinguish verified programme results from political messaging and misinformation, public trust in government, NGOs and development partners could weaken.
