CISLAC LAUNCHES FOUR-YEAR CIVIC ACTION PROJECT
WHAT HAPPENED: On 15 September in Abuja, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) launched its four-year People Influence & Action (PIA) project, supported by Christian Aid. The programme runs from August 2026 to March 2030 across Nigeria, with initial focus on Kano, Kaduna and Plateau.
WHY IT MATTERS: The project will strengthen civic participation, public-finance accountability, citizen-state dialogue and media mobilisation, with specific attention to women, youth, persons with disabilities and underserved groups.
NHRC PUSHES RIGHTS INTO CLIMATE RESPONSE
WHAT HAPPENED: On 15 September, National Human Rights Commission Executive Secretary Tony Ojukwu, SAN, called for human rights to be integrated into Nigeria’s climate policies during an NHRC-Danish Institute for Human Rights workshop in Abuja.
WHY IT MATTERS: Flooding, extreme heat and changing weather patterns increasingly affect life, health, livelihoods and property. NHRC is also preparing staff to handle climate-related human-rights complaints.
NIGER DELTA’S $160BN DEVELOPMENT QUESTION
WHAT HAPPENED: At the Niger Delta Economic and Investment Summit in Port Harcourt on 15 September, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede estimated that the region had received about $160 billion in federal allocations and development resources over 27 years.
WHY IT MATTERS: Speakers including WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala called for stronger private-sector investment, diversification, jobs, measurable results and greater accountability rather than continued dependence on oil revenues.
EDUCATION FINANCING GETS NEW PUSH
WHAT HAPPENED: On 15 September in Abuja, education stakeholders including the Global Campaign for Education, GPE and Nigerian civil-society partners held a high-level dialogue on education financing ahead of the Global Partnership for Education replenishment process.
WHY IT MATTERS: The discussions put domestic financing, donor support and accountability at the centre of efforts to improve education outcomes and sustain investment in Nigeria’s education system.

CSOs SEEK STRONGER ROLE IN HEALTH REFORMS
WHAT HAPPENED: On 15 September in Abuja, health stakeholders and civil-society organisations reviewed progress on Nigeria’s health reforms. Prof. Muhammad Pate emphasised the importance of CSO participation, while advocates called for stronger accountability and sustainable health financing.
WHY IT MATTERS: Greater civil-society involvement can provide community-level evidence and feedback that helps government and partners identify gaps in implementation.
BENUE FARMERS TEST REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE
WHAT HAPPENED: On 14 September, Sasakawa Africa Association visited pilot farms in Gwer East and Gboko, Benue State, where farmers are being trained in regenerative agriculture, compost production and climate-resilient farming.
WHY IT MATTERS: The approach aims to improve soil health, reduce input costs and strengthen resilience. Farmers are receiving improved seedlings and technical support while using locally available farm and household waste for compost.

New projects, funding commitments and policy initiatives create attention, but their development value will ultimately depend on implementation, measurable outcomes and transparent follow-up.
