Tinubu Approves 10 New RECs

The Announcement

President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the appointment of 10 new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This action aligns with the authority granted to him by Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, Amended), as well as Section 6 of the Electoral Act (2022).

As conveyed in an official statement by Presidential Media Adviser, Ajuri Ngelale, the RECs will serve for a term of five years, contingent upon confirmation by the Nigerian Senate. The newly appointed RECs and their respective states of responsibility are as follows:

Mr. Etekamba Umoren – Akwa Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Mr. Isah Shaka Ehimeakne – Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Mr. Bamidele Agbede – Ekiti State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Mr. Jani Adamu Bello – Gombe State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Dr. Taiye Ilayasu – Kwara State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi – Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Alhaji Yahaya Bello – Nasarawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Prof. Mohammed Yalwa – Niger State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Dr. Anugbum Onuoha – Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Mr. Abubakar Fawa Dambo – Zamfara State Resident Electoral Commissioner

Expectations

President Tinubu expects the newly appointed RECs to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct in the execution of their duties. This is in keeping with his commitment to fostering a new and sustainable norm of transparent, equitable, and conflict-free electoral proceedings in Nigeria, as emphasised by Mr Ngelale.
