The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a manhunt for the driver of an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep allegedly involved in the gas plant fire that occurred at Liberty Junction, Byazhin, Kubwa, Abuja.
The Police said the driver was allegedly driving against traffic when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the cooking gas facility, triggering the fire.

The incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, after the Police received a distress call from a resident reporting a fire outbreak at a cooking gas plant in the area.
Following the alert, officers from the Kubwa Police Division were immediately deployed to the scene.
On arrival, the officers reportedly found that the fire had spread beyond the gas facility to nearby shops and other properties, raising concerns about the safety of people and businesses in the area.
The Police subsequently contacted the Federal Fire Service, which responded to the scene and joined efforts to contain the fire.
According to the Police, preliminary investigations showed that the incident was triggered by a road crash involving an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep.
The driver was allegedly travelling against traffic when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the gas plant.
The impact reportedly caused the fire, which later spread to nearby shops and properties.
The Police said the driver and occupants of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the incident.

The Command said it had established the identity of the driver and commenced efforts to apprehend him.
According to the Police, officers are currently on the trail of the driver as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash and subsequent fire.
The Command said it would continue to pursue the case and take appropriate action once the suspect is apprehended.
Despite the fire spreading to nearby shops and properties, the Police said no casualties were recorded in the incident.
The Command said the fire had been successfully contained, while the full extent and financial value of the property destroyed were yet to be determined.
“While the Command is currently on the trail of the erring driver, having established his identity, the fire has been contained and no casualties have been recorded,” the statement said.
The Police Command assured residents and business owners in the area that normal activities had resumed following the containment of the fire.
It also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, activities or incidents to the nearest police station.
