In a bid to curb the prevalent practice of demanding exorbitant dowries, the Tor Tiv has declared an end to this tradition, labelling it a borrowed culture that no longer aligns with Tiv customs.
During the Tiv Women Summit in Gboko, Benue State, the Tor Tiv, HRM Prof. James Iorzua Ortese Ayatse, Chairman of the Benue State Traditional Council, outlined the revised marriage rites. The new requirements include a fixed sum of N100,000, accompanied by the presence of three elders. Additionally, celebrations are to be held at the groom’s home rather than the bride’s.
This announcement elicited diverse responses within the Tiv Kingdom.
A Makurdi-based businessman, Mr. Henry Uwasen, commended the decision but raised concerns about parental compliance, noting the entrenched enjoyment of traditional gift-giving.
“That’s a good idea, but the question is, will our parents comply with that? Because they enjoy collecting palm oil and other stuff.”
Managing Director of Sky Packaging Materials Ltd., Mr. Kuma, described the N100,000 as a marriage rite and not a sales rite.
Meanwhile, a member of Benue Issues and Politics, Famave Vershima Godwin, expressed concerns about the enforcement of the decree, questioning the punitive measures for non-compliance.
In response, proponents of the Tor Tiv’s decree emphasised the importance of cultural preservation and loyalty to the king, advocating for adherence to the new guidelines as a sign of respect and patriotism.
