Building A Career In Civil Society

Zikirullahi Mualeem Ibrahim’s journey has included leadership roles in organisations and initiatives focused on strengthening democracy and citizen participation.

He previously served as General Secretary of United Action for Democracy (UAD), where he was involved in efforts to advance democratic rights and freedoms.

His experience also includes serving as Chairman of the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), a prominent civil society coalition involved in promoting credible elections and democratic governance.

He was also a Co-Chair of Project Swift Count (PSC), an initiative that focused on citizen observation and the integrity of electoral processes.

These roles placed Zikirullahi Mualeem Ibrahim at the intersection of civic engagement and electoral accountability, exposing him to the realities of Nigeria’s democratic processes and the importance of informed citizen participation.

At The Heart Of Civic Education

At CHRICED, Zikirullahi Mualeem Ibrahim has continued to work at the intersection of human rights and civic education.

His approach centres on helping citizens understand their rights and encouraging them to participate meaningfully in governance. Through civic education and advocacy programmes, his work has sought to ensure that citizens particularly those in vulnerable and marginalised communities are better equipped to demand accountability from institutions.

For Zikirullahi Mualeem Ibrahim, civic education is an important part of democracy because citizens cannot effectively exercise rights they do not understand.

His work has therefore extended beyond advocacy to include public education, stakeholder engagement, programme development and efforts aimed at influencing policy and institutional change.

Bringing Media And Advocacy Together

Zikirullahi Mualeem Ibrahim’s academic background has also shaped his approach to advocacy.

He holds a Master’s degree in Mass Communication by Research from the University of Leicester, where his studies examined issues including media history, regulation, media and society, and the role of media in a global context.

The academic experience gave him a deeper understanding of the relationship between communication, society and public participation.

That knowledge has proved particularly relevant to his work in civil society, where effective communication can determine how communities understand their rights and respond to issues affecting them.

His understanding of media has also strengthened his ability to assess programmes, communicate complex issues and use public engagement as a tool for social change.

Leadership Beyond Titles

Zikirullahi Mualeem Ibrahim has held several senior positions, his career reflects more than a succession of titles.

His involvement with TMG and Project Swift Count, in particular, demonstrates a sustained interest in electoral integrity and democratic participation.

Working with diverse stakeholders in the civil society and governance space has also required the ability to build relationships, manage competing interests and maintain focus on shared objectives.

That experience has contributed to his reputation as a strategic leader capable of navigating the complexities of the non-profit sector.

A Continuing Commitment To Democracy

Zikirullahi Mualeem Ibrahim’s work comes at a time when questions around accountability, citizen participation, human rights and the credibility of democratic institutions remain central to Nigeria’s development conversation.

Through his leadership at CHRICED and his previous roles, he has continued to contribute to efforts aimed at creating a more informed citizenry and strengthening the relationship between citizens and public institutions.

His career demonstrates how civic education, human rights advocacy, media and democratic participation can come together to create meaningful social impact.

For Zikirullahi Mualeem Ibrahim, the goal is ultimately about ensuring that citizens are not merely observers of governance but active participants in shaping the society in which they live.

His journey through Nigeria’s civil society landscape is therefore a story of sustained advocacy one rooted in education, public engagement and the belief that stronger citizens and accountable institutions are essential to a healthy democracy.
